Dr. Mark Werwath brings a rich background of project/process management and 25 years of new product development experience to the classroom.  He began his career in industrial engineering with Motorola, developing a strong operations background as he supported factory automation, process streamlining and process optimization. Moving to Northrop Grumman he focused on new product development, managing the teams that designed, developed, and produced RF transmitters. Mark then returned to Motorola, and during his 20 year tenure worked in nearly every sector of the business including hand sets, infrastructure, and the government side, leading teams that developed, tested, implemented and integrated large scale technology projects.  As a principal with Pro-Lima Consulting Mark’s clients included Abbott Laboratories, Baxter Medical Products, Northwestern Technological Institute, DePaul University and University of Chicago. Now the Executive Director of WMS Gaming, Mark continues to manage new product development and process improvement for this innovative public company.

Leveraging his industry experience, Professor Werwath uses real-world case studies in his Project Management course, examining Sony Corporation, Motorola Bandit, and Boeing 767. By analyzing what worked and what didn’t in these cases Mark bridges theory with practice, providing insight into maturity models; how to organize for effective project management; how leadership styles contribute to the success or failure of managing people and projects; as well as techniques for project planning including cost management and cost tracking.  Most engineers find themselves managing projects at some point in their careers, and Mark’s courses provide the tools and insight needed to so the job well.

In teaching Process Management Mark focuses on the recurring effort behind operations, whether it be sales, manufacturing, distribution or even performance management. Any process where actions are repeatable can be measured, analyzed and optimized to create a template or model for success. This then leads to standards against which performance is measured to identify where problems exist and where improvements are possible. Students appreciate that Professor Werwath’s approach to process management is not formulaic, but practical and rooted in real world examples.
