Dr. Mark Daskin is the Walter P. Murphy Professor of IEMS, and former chair of the IEMS department. His research focuses on supply chain network design in general, and facility location models in particular. He analyzes supply chain serviceability (how can they perform more effectively and provide better service to customers) survivability (what happens when something goes wrong) and sustainability (designing a supply chain that efficient, reliable, survivable, but that also has a low carbon footprint). Nearly every engineering manager deals with supply chain questions at some point in their careers: where to source supplies, how to get products from the manufacturer to the customers, how much inventory to carry, etc. Professor Daskin teaches students to build supply chain models, analyze problems, and optimize results. These same analytical models can be applied to many other aspects of business management and decision making.
Dr. Mark Daskin has achieved various academic honors and awards, including the National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator Award (1984), the Advisor of the year, McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, Northwestern University (1998-1999), the Bette and Nieson Harris Professor of Teaching Excellence, McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Northwestern University ( September 2006 - August 2007 ), the Fred C. Crane Distinguished Service Award, IIE (2005), the Fulbright Research Award (1989-1990), the IIE Fellows Award (2006), the INFORMS Fellow Award (2004), and the Technical Innovation in Industrial Engineering Award, Institute of Industrial Engineers (2001).
Education:
Ph.D. Engineering Massachusetts Institute of Technology 1978
Certificate of Post Graduate study Cambridge University 1975
B.S. Civil Engineering Massachusetts Institute of Technology 1974
Boards and Memberships:
Professor Daskin is the former vice-president and current President of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), a professional society with more than 10,000 members nationwide. He is the former editor-in-chief of IIE Transactions, the flagship journal of the Institute of Industrial Engineers. He serves on a number of editorial boards and is a former editor-in-chief of Transportation Science.
