Professor Thompson's research and teaching both focus on field research methodology and systems engineering and management. Specific current areas of interest include information based framework models, parameter focused research design, process descriptive methods, and a variety of important practical problems in project management which are not covered in the literature, including identifying high risk tasks, technical and time dependencies among tasks, intermediate performance measures, and allocation of time between planning and performing.
